Flag competition?

Jordan's Big Flagpole

I just read that Bahrain has unfurled the world’s largest flag (below), measuring 169.5 metere, beating Pakistan’s record.

Bahrian's Big Flag

A year and a half or so ago, Jordan put up the world’s tallest flag pole.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is there a flag competition I’m unaware of going on nowadays?

I still like Jordan’s flag display more. Yes, I’m biased.

The Saudi camera phone saga comes to an end

John from Crossroads Arabia alerteted me to this. Thanks John!

Saudi Arabia to Overturn Ban on Camera Phones

Saudi Arabia will overturn a ban on the import and sale of mobile camera phones in the Kingdom, press reports said yesterday.
Although widely used across the country, camera phones are illegal in the Kingdom. In many cases the phones have been used to invade privacy, particularly of women, prompting fights at markets, wedding halls, schools and other public places as well as triggering family disputes.
Local papers quoted unnamed sources as saying the authorities had asked the Ministry of Interior to put in place regulations to prevent the negative use of the camera equipment in the phone.
Body search is a common practice in universities for all female students to ensure they don’t carry camera phones. Girls, however, find ways to hide the devices and bring them to lecture rooms. In wedding halls, some operators have resorted to hiring special search squads to check every invitee to ensure they leave their camera phones out of the hall.

My first Christmas gift

My Shujat caricature

Today I received my first Christmas gift. It is a cartoon, a caricature really, of yours truly created by a very good friend of mine, the famous cartoonist Shujat. He not only worked to draw the cartoon but he also painted and framed it before giving it to me in a nice box with a ‘Merry Christmas’ message right here before I leave on vacation. That was so sweet of him. Thanks Shujat!

Terror suspects block opening of trial involving Zarqawi

AMMAN: Nine terror suspects allegedly involved in an Al Qaeda-linked plot to carry out chemical and conventional attacks in Jordan obstructed Wednesday’s opening of their trial, refusing to deal with military judges considering the case.

Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, Al Qaeda’s point man in Iraq who is on the run with a $25 million bounty on his head, and three other fugitives are being tried in absentia with the nine men who have been in police custody since April.

Azmi al-Jayousi, allegedly an al-Zarqawi co-conspirator and head of the Jordan-based terror cell, refused to answer the chief military judge when he sought the routine verification of the defendants’ identities at the opening trial. “I and the other defendants don’t want to speak to you until you heed our demands to permit our families to visit us and allow us to join the cellblocks of political prisoners,” al-Jayousi told Col Fawaz Buqour, president of the State Security Court.

Buqour responded: “We’ll see.” Military prosecutors said the defendants were confined to solitary confinement in an undisclosed Jordanian prison.

I can’t believe this murderer is asking to be treated like a political prisoner? What politics is he preaching? The politics of butchering the innocent? I really don’t think either this guy or his cronies should receive any accommodation.
