A real serious problem for Westerners who come to Jordan. I am not sure if other countries in the ME/SE Asia/S. America have this same problem with the population being able to identify streets. I’ve see adds in newspapers in Jordan where they have to draw a map with hotels/circles/Safeway/McDonalds/BK/Pizza Hut as “major”landmarks, rather than just identifying the name of the street so that customers can find the business.
If Jordan is looking to increase the number of tourists then they really need to address and remedy this problem. Again IMHO this goes back to Amman expanding so rapidly and people building where they see fit.
It’s true. Everything is “It’s behind the Shabab Grocery” and so forth, making it tricky for any kind of implementation of 911 or delivery services of any kind, that is, until they learn where you are: “Near Terra Santa college, over the hill and around the corner.”
I taught English to a poor frustrated street namer and map maker for Amman Municipality. He gave me this big beautiful painted map of streets and neighborhoods in Amman, which I sadly had to leave behind in my flat. His frustration with local adapatation to street signs was palpable.
People are more concerned with big flagpoles 😉
Sorry for the typo “adds” s/b “ads”.
