White Noise

White NoiseIf you thought The Grudge, The Ring or even Saw were scary flicks, then to keep your heart intact I advise you not to watch White Noise.

It freaked the hell out of me. I think the last time I was that scared was probably when I watched The Exorcist, which, in my humble opinion, is still the scariest movie of all time.

White Noise deals with the concept of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena), which is supposedly the method through which the dead connect with the living to send certain messages. I had never heard of EVP before, something that made the movie very engaging for me. I’m not sure why the critics were hard on this flick, as I thought it was well made and the performance by Michael Keaton was not bad. I would give it 7/10.

If you are in the mood to scare yourself to death and maybe mess with your mind by thinking of ways that you can communicate with the dead, then this movie is for you.

Jordan to host Nobel laureates’ conference

Many of the world’s greatest thinkers will gather in
the ancient city of Petra in Jordan in May for a conference of Nobel
laureates, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie
Wiesel announced.

Between 35 and 40 Nobel winners for chemistry, economics, literature,
medicine, peace, physics and physiology will be invited to address the
world’s most pressing issues May 18-19, just ahead of the World
Economic Forum (news – web sites) summit in Jordan.
"We are bringing together the best that humanity has," Wiesel said of
the Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates, which his foundation is
co-sponsoring.

This is extremely uplifting news and a very good PR boost for Jordan. I
tell you, with such initiatives and wise leadership, Jordan is
moving in the right direction. And for those who think otherwise, I
leave you with this very candid interview with king Abdallah.

This is just cool!

Le Pain Nu

I have been following a really cool book blog entitled Moorish Girl for a while now and it got its hooks in me. This morning I was checking it when I found that the blog’s author, Leila, was giving away one of her favorite novels, Le Pain Nu by Mohamed Choukri, to the first person that e-mailed her asking for the book. So I got right in there. To my surprise, I was the lucky winner.

She just e-mailed me asking for my address. Isn’t this so cool! I just love the blogosphere. It keeps getting better and better by the day.

The beauty of localization

Dishdasheh crossing

This sign is probably one of the most interesting things I have seen in Doha thus far. It is what I regard as localization at its best. When I first looked at it, I was confused. I thought it was a drawing of a woman and then I realized it was a picture of a man outfitted in the national dress, a dishdasheh. Cool, huh? I mean why should traffic signs here be adorned with drawings of individuals in western attire, particularly when the majority of citizens wear otherwise. I love it!
