For some reason, I have not been pursuing music as aggressively as I used to in my earlier years. This might have something to do with a shifting of priorities or maybe it’s just because I feel so uninspired in this country that music has become something of a luxury instead of a necessity. Nowadays, the only time I really get to enjoy music is when I’m in the kitchen making a meal, washing dishes or cleaning up the house.
Here are some snippets of the eclectic mix playing on our kitchen music station:

 U2 ~ How to dismantle an atomic bomb: I’m totally digging this album. In this latest work, U2 seems to have re-embraced their earlier style, as this album bears little similarity to their techno-inspired recent work like All that you can’t leave behind or Pop. It is a mix of the old and the new. Great stuff.

Alison Krauss and Union Station ~ Lonely runs both ways: I’m not really a country-music fan, but this one is different. It is what I think of as modern country music. Alison has a tantalizing voice. I’m hooked on her music.

Dave Matthews Band ~ Under the table and dreaming: This is an album that I can never stop listening to. It always enjoys a prestigious place among my music collection. Every track is a delight.

Maroon 5 ~ Songs about Jane: On this, their debut album, this young band made it big simply because their music is so engaging. My favorite is She will be loved.

Peter Cincotti ~ Peter Cincotti: A young jazz singer with lots of potential. He meshes pop with classic jazz tunes. Very enjoyable listening.

Nelly Furtado ~ Folklore: This is the album I go to whenever I’m in a dark state of mind. It is enjoyable, up- beat listening; each song is a treat.

Sarah McLachlan ~ Afterglow: The latest addition to the Tynes collection. It provides soothing songs for the troubled soul.

She does rock big time. she was amazing during the grammys last week. even my mom, who is your traditional listens to arabic music type woman, who hates R&B and pop, loves alicia keys. shes classy, unique and very talented.

Lol, Linda, sorry but like Jeff said, I’m a metal head 🙂 I can’t stand RNB/rap/hip hop, and I get bored from slow music like Alicia’s.
She’s very famous here though.
hey do guys listen to alicia keys? im not sure if you are into that genre but if you want something really unique and awesome, she is the way to go.
A metalhead eh? 🙂 Listen, find yourself some tracks from The Cult ~ Electric. They’ve got some other great albums but this one is a standout. Check out Love removal machine and Wild Flower for a sampling. This record is old but fantastic, from the carefree days of youth.
You must know Angus and the boys from AC/DC, always good for a spin as well. Check out Back in Black from the album of the same title or For those about to rock (we salute you) and many, many more.
Thanks Jeff. From the songs you posted right now I enjoyed In The Evening, but I already know I’m a big fan of Led Zeppelin. They’re so Intense, and that’s what I look for when I listen to music. My next favorite was Are You Gonna Be My Girl, cool beat. I’ll try to download some stuff, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed them Roba. If you like Lit the album to look for is A place in the sun. But if you want some ‘Gee-tar’ then by all means get the Led out with Zepplin, here with In the evening off their last album, In through the out door. There’s a new generation turning the clock back to the days of Led, Lit being but one. There’s also Jet because four letters names are just so uncool. Check out Are you gonna be my girl from Get Born. And there’s more. But that’ll have to do for now.
With regard to the almighty Thievery they are real favorite of mine, hailing from my home for many a year, Washington DC. That’s a track from The Richest Man in Babylon but nearly everything these guys do is just great. Here and here are Indra and Lebanese Blonde respectively from another great album The mirror conspiracy. I can’t get enough of these guys. They are part of genre called ‘downbeat.’ If you like, there are tons of recomendations but you might like the Dorfmeister half of the Kruder/Dorfmeister team, called Tosca and his album Suzuki with great tracks like Honey and the title track. Enjoy 🙂
Ok, I listened to the samples, and lets see… I already like Pink Floyd and Rolling Stones, and from the songs you had there I loved Lit and Theivery Corportation. I think I’m even going to download the Lit one! Any recommendations?
The wife gives only a partial accounting. We have a library of other cd’s but our ‘go-to’ disc is a compendium of MP3s with artists as diverse as [links play song (.wma) except Força, which is medium-band Real video] Thievery Corporation and Kruder & Dorfmeister to the Thompson Twins, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Fatboy Slim, Lit and Shakira. It’s a good eight to ten hours of songs we just can’t seem to stop playing or humming when we’re not at home.
I’m new to the Nelly Furtado ranks. I heard and certainly liked things like I’m like a bird but I never bit and downloaded or bought a cd of hers. I have to say, she’s hard not to like. There is a quality to her voice. When she plays about in the high notes, as she likes to do, her voice takes on a thin reedy quality that has such an urgency and life to it. Songs like Força and The grass is green have such a power to them, they just can’t be denied.
I never expected to get hooked by Nelly, like I got hooked by Shaikra but these two ladies really offer something unique. Both write and sing their own songs and are polyglots 🙂 — multilingual, like the wife — actually singing in other languages. And to top it all off they are easy on the eyes, if you know what I mean. They are two oases of ‘Popdom’ in what is fast becoming a mean, expansive, unforgiving desert.
Hehe, I love this post 🙂 I think you can tell a lot about a person from the sort of music they listen to. And lets see… I guess we have very different taste in music, the only bands here that I find alright are U2 and Dave Matthews Band. Anyway, it’s all good 🙂
