Yahoo News chose this AFP picture to go along with the Jordanian romance story. Is this a fair representation of Jordanian women? I think not. And you wonder how stereotypes are created! Hat tip: [Scooby] |

Come on Iyas. Ya3ni I’d never dress like that and I’d never understand people who do, but the essence of modernization is freedom to wear whatever you want 🙂
and lately you’ve been in a “ta2abata sharan” mood 😛 yeah, we all like you anyway 😛
Hear hear Jameed!
Linda, save me your political correctness! There is something wrong with dressing like that in the year 2005
willi mish 3ajboh…
Well I had the impression that with the volume they deal with, news agency editors don’t really give a second thought to what they send on the wires. But anyway, don’t beat on me, with Iran it’s always this photo!
Yes, from working a news desk I’m sure that’s what happened Arash. But the problem is that after they found that, they then looked at the “romance” story and thought: These two things work together. Again, I’m guessing whatever editor approved this combination thought “These two work, showing what those crazy, offbeat Jordanians are like.” That lack of sensitivity stereotypes the people and the region.
I think many Western editors find these images “interesting” and would defend them with “this situation exists.” But much like a previous discussion about bell-shaped curves and the good and evil of Jordanians, images like this get more press than any other. That’s bad for Jordan. There is such a broad array of people and places that could be shown. Why are these chosen so consistently? Western editors [I say this because in the Arabic press (with Arab editors) you see that broad spectrum of images] seem to like images they know may “shock” western minds perhaps just as a means to sell a story or paper. I think sometimes they may even be trying to send a message: “Look at these people.” I really hate it.
Well Arash, personally, I would call this irresponsible journalism.
Haha, I actually saw this photo the other day while searching for alternative sources for the online romance story. I thought you’d be pissed if you saw it! But don’t complain, this is an archive photo. They probably put ‘internet’ and ‘Jordan’ in their database and this is the first thing that came up!
Oh lordy. This is the image Americans have of Arabs. That they ALL walk around dressed like this. Im not saying there is anything wrong with being dressed like this, but it is wrong to represent a group of people with just one image.
Interesting as well to note that AFP filed this photograph in their “Offbeat” section yet they chose to pair it up with this story like they are suggesting both this image and this story are representative of those crazy, offbeat Jordanians.
Jordanian “women”? They are simply men looking for gay porn.
