This is what I call the uplifting news of the day.
AMMAN (AFP) – A Bangladeshi housemaid was reportedly the sole winner of Jordan’s New Year lottery, netting record pre-tax prize money of 350,000 dollars.
It was the largest payout in the history of the lottery, which is run by the general union of charitable organisations, the official Petra news agency said.
Mohammad Abdel Malek, 57, had been working in Jordan for 23 years, one of tens of thousands of Asians employed in the kingdom on wages of as little as 100 dollars a month.
But the lucky winner will have to wait three or four weeks before pocketing his life-transforming windfall, lottery chief Hani Shaqaa told Petra. He will also have to pay 11 percent tax on his winnings.
I hope this money does not ruin this man’s life. Unfortunatley, in California, many of the people who have won the lotto end up having their lives ruined because of their new found money.
Yea, this is divine justice. I hope it comes through.
I love the tax situation, although it beats other countries outside the Gulf. But that aside, this is what is called divine justice. And in light of the recent tragedy to befall Bangladesh, I’d say it couldn’t come at a better time.
On a more pessimistic note, I’ll be watching this story to see when and if this guy actually gets his money. My own experience in the “having to wait a few weeks” department has shown that the weeks the Jordanian bureaucracy is referring to are a bit longer than one might expect. But then I’m cynical and jaded ;P
Arash,
I’m sure he is a resident, cause this comes with the work permit.
Shouldn’t there be a residency requirement?
Well well well
he have the chance to have a jordanian housemaid work for him now 🙂
Can I post my CV?
