I never thought I would live to see the day when Jordanian women would be zipping through the streets of Amman on scooters. Apparently I was mistaken, as women in Amman are indeed scooting about! I have to admit, I’m loving it. The woman in this picture is Haya Karadhseh Qubain who, according to Ahmad, is a teacher at an Amman school. It is worth noting that this woman comes from my hometown of Madaba. Here’s a profile of Jordan’s scooter woman as a PDF file from Al Rai (Arabic). Via: [360 east] For the record, scooters and motorbikes were banned in Jordan until fairly recently. I believe the decision was made in the early 80’s after a series of fatal traffic accidents involving motorcycles. Nowadays, scooters are allowed on the streets of Jordan. Motorbikes, however, remained restricted. They are allowed for business but can’t be owned by individuals. |
Come to Egypt and you’ll see much more than that… 🙂
Abu shreek, last year 2 men from bani sa5er died in a bike running a way from the police the wher smuggling drugs.
Obviously Anon is “min il noo3 il 3asabi ktheerâ€
Nevertheless, bikes remain illegal in Jordan and they need “royal court: deewan†connections/ authorization.
Even the scooters and the small-engine ones are very hard to register and there are too mnay complications surrounding the whole process, (SEE Addustour daily, Aug 28th, opinion page: Nazeeh Qussouss ).
By the way, I cannot recall hearing about a single fatality resulting from a bike accident in the last 15 years!!
I can now die a proud madabawee.
1) Haya is not from Madaba, she is married to a guy from Madaba, she is from Salt
2) To the idiot that said scooters were banned for security purposes, that is totally not the case, it was banned as Natasha said for safety reasons after several deaths a few years ago
3) To “me” and what is 1st world? Isn’t this a Euro-Centric term? What makes a country first world exactly? Actually according to the UN there is nothing such as 1st world, 2nd world etc… There is an unoficial list of developed countries and developing countries
Always glad to help
WOW! Finally Jordan joined the First World! I am IMPRESSED with this achievement.
The popular opinion was that Motor bikes, especially those of higher engine capacities (power) are banned from Jordan for “security purposesâ€, since they are historically the perfect get-away means of transportation for assassination operations.
What the hell is that? What brand and model is it? I’ve been searching the internet for the last 20 minutes and couldn’t figure it out! It looks good though, I’d like to try it 😀
But you know what I find funny the most? Am I the only one who thinks that that helmet is too small? 😀
It seems counter-intuitive to ban motorbikes, with our traffic problem and gas prices being what they are.
People from Madaba are pioneers.
