A journey into ‘2046’

Faye_wongAfter spending some time online, the awesome husband managed to get us free tickets for the screening of the Chinese movie2046. So last night we made our way to the E St. Cinema in downtown DC, where we along with a house full of other movie aficionados got the chance to see the flick before its DC release.

What did I think of it? Artistically, it was brilliant, as was the performance by Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Ziyi Zhang (The Road Home, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero).

The movie tells the story of a science-fiction writer who struggles with loneliness and his own pursuit of happiness and true love. The author’s novel is intercut into his waking life taking the viewer through an overwhelming, complex journey of past, present and future. In a nutshell, the movie is a reflection on lost loves, passion and bad timing.

The only criticism I could give this move is the fact it dragged, lasting a bit over two hours. But I guess the movie was not made for mainstream audience, those with a short attention span like myself. I highly recommend this movie. For those living in this part of the globe, Netflix 2046 now!

Still on the topic of the Washington Monument, probably one of the coolest things we did while the sister was here was taking a trip up inside the monument and getting a stunning view of DC from above. Getting a glimpse like this was worth the wait in line under the glaring sun and all the security procedures.

Any visitor to this fascinating city should make sure to take a trip up top to see the view! Did I mention that it was “gratis,” as are the majority of other attractions in this diplomatic city? Neat, no! Here is a picture from on high. Admittedly, it is not as great a shot as it could be because it had to be taken through a thick glass window, reducing the quality. [That is a plane passing by up top] Ah well, at least it gives a general idea.

Photo of the day

The Mall

This picture was taken by the husband during our tour in downtown DC yesterday. The photo was shot from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where there’s a great view of the reflecting pool and the mammoth Washington Monument. The weather was just divine and the city itself was buzzing with life, jammed with tourists who came to enjoy what this place has to offer on Labor Day weekend. Among the places we visited were the Smithsonian’s American History museum, the National Archives and the Vietnam War memorial. It is worth noting that this is a just a drop in the bucket of what this cosmopolitan city has to offer. More pictures to come and more posts to be uploaded. Until then for those who are in this part of the world, enjoy your long weekend.

Take your hands off our hatta!

London Bomber

Can anyone one tell me what this Pakistani-British lunatic is doing wearting this red headscarf (commonly known as a Hatta). This headgear is primarily worn by indigenous Jordanian and Saudi tribes! Why on earth does he think he has any connection to it such that he would wear it in his video bombing claim? Is he from a Jordanian or Saudi Arabian tribe ? Hey you lunatic Jihadis, leave our Hattas alone!!

Sin City

Sin_city The film of choice last night was Sin City. It had been sitting on the computer table for a bit but we never got around to watching it until yesterday, as we were busy exploring the wonders of DC with the sister.

So last night we got a chance to watch it and, for some reason, I was expecting it to be better. Maybe it was too violent for my taste or maybe it was over-hyped because I was a bit disappointed. I thought the story was a bit disjointed and dragged somehow. But I thought the graphics were stunning and extremely creative. Although it might be too gory for some, the movie is still worth watching, as it is quite unique. I would give it 7/10.
