As part of a new subscriber promotion, our cable company, Comcast, decided to give us free tickets for a baseball game between the DC Nationals and the Florida Marlins. So the other day we made our way to RFK, the stadium for DC’s Nationals for me to get an education watching this all-American experience live. I must admit, the overall atmosphere was exhilarating with live music and vendors wandering here and there shouting out names of different kinds of beer and other merchandise.
It was also fascinating to see the excitement of a crowd that came from all walks of life. As to the game itself, well, frankly, I really did not get that much of what was going on. Although the husband spent most of the duration of the game explaining the rules to me, I only managed to come away with the following: there is a guy who hits the ball and then runs from one base to the other before someone "tags" him out!
While it was very thrilling to watch baseball live, I thought the game dragged an eternity, as it lasted over three hours. I also felt it lacked the continual excitement provided by some of my favorite sports like football (not American) or basketball. But all in all the experience was memorable and well worth the time and the effort. Go Nationals!
Jameed, thanks for setting the record straight. Do they even have apples in Germany?
And Linda, yes Pete Rose should be in Cooperstown! As a player only though.
who is pete rose?! i only know that apple pie is German!
here is how you make it controversial iyas, lets talk about if we think pete rose should be inducted into the hall of fame.
Apple pie is German
Glad you had a good time. Looks like you sat behind the bullpen…and just over the left feild fence! Lots of balls probably were hit in your directtion.
What a sweet game baseball is (albeit somewhat borning)…this is probably the only sport I like to watch at the stadium. I don’t really watch as I am usually chatting with the people around me. I just enjoy the whole atmosphere.
Baseball is as American as apple pie. And with ticket prices ranging from $8 to over $100 many people who cannot attend or take their kids to basketball or football games (who’s ticket prices usually start at $25 and $54, respectively), baseball tickets are within many budgets.
And I hope you enjoyed a hot dog and peanuts! Did you attend batting practice? And did you catch a HR ball or foul ball? That is when you really will get excited about baseball….catching your first game ball in the stands!
It will become controvesial if Americans want to prove to us that this is a great game !
did you sing “take me out to the ball game”? that’s the complete american experience
PS this post is not controversial enough. mish 3ajibni…
A Swiss apartment-mate of mine in college once explained to me why the spectators at a baseball game cheer as follows: “You see, the game is so boring and devoid of action that whenever a player moves or runs the crowds start cheering!” 🙂
Natasha,
I dont blame you for not getting excited on this game. I was invited once to the Mariners game in Seattle. There were around 46,000 in the stadium. A friend of mine who owns an Engineering company, invited me and gave me a free ticket like he did to some of his employees. On our way down to Seattle, he was so excited and explained to me how this game runs in the family and everybody liked it. I had to show some excitment so that he does not get disappointed. All what I know that there was innings, some famous names that I forgot by now, and that the team I should be fan of is the Mariners against..I guess red sox or something. While it is a great game ( as I was told ), there is something mysterious in it that does not attract our attention ( or in us that we do not understand it)
Hey natasha
It seems i may be in town end of the month, around the 25th, send me an email so we can possibly arrange a meet.
