I hope I’m mistaken but it seems the US media has gotten into a fairly recent frenzy about Jordan-related news that has a distinct Not without my daughter flavor about it. Here is one example with headline:
Estranged Jordanian father charged in Ashby kidnapping
The estranged husband of an Ashby mother who has not seen her daughter
in 11 years was arraigned in Ayer District Court Wednesday on one
count of kidnapping of a minor by a relative.
Mhad Kadter, a citizen of both the United States and Jordan, was
arrested in Ohio with the cooperation of the FBI, the National Center
for Missing Children and Interpol.
And yet another:
Kidnapped boy, now 15, reunites at last with mom
For 14 years, Kathleen Ziadeh longed to see her only son, Zaid, who as
a toddler was abducted to the Mideast by his Jordanian father tired of
life in the United States. During those years, Ziadeh and the child’s grandmother, Barbara
Dooley, lobbied U.S. presidents and Jordanian royalty, sought help
from the State Department and courts overseas, and even had the weight
of a national newspaper columnist behind them. But none of their efforts succeeded in bringing back Zaid or easing their heartbreak …
a woman is assaulted every two minutes in America, accoridng to the Department of Justice.
wow thats a lot. look u guys stop trying to compare countries and cultures. every country, culture, or religion has its sickos, evil, etc. dont make me list them for all!
Thanks Kinzi.
In fact, women’s witness is half of a man’s. As for Christian versus a moslem, thats something else. Long live democracy. Can anyone answer my unrelated question here; What is the wisdom ( and I am sure there is a list of good reasons !)behind having your religion on your personal ID in Jordan ?.
Jareer, I just got an update on Siham Qandah’s case. As of March 15 the bro couldn’t produce documents proving he hadn’t embezzled $17K from the kid’s trust funds. He is now trying to get Siham’s case thrown out of court because as a Christian her witness is only worth half of a his as a Muslim. He is still battling for custody and for the kids, now 15 and 16. The next hearing is scheduled for April 3, I think.
Natasha, have you been following this one? I can forward the file if you are interested.
Metal “it is a matter of very foolish choices on both sides” ie: both sexes. But in every case I have seen there has been a very crafty man and a very naive/stupid female. I think you live in a pretty Western enclave.
I’m laughing, me a feminist? My husband would laugh, too.I am as pro-masculinity as they come and blame feminists for the de-masculinization of Western manhood. Because I work with victims of abuse it’s “psycho-babble”? No, there is a serious lack of equilibrium between the sexes in the Middle East, as has already been stated many times. I am a victim’s rights advocate, whether male or female. It’s what I do when I’m not on this site, my job in Jordan. Broken women don’t make the best future wives and moms in Jordan, and I want to do what I can to see this country do great things. Just haven’t seen too many male victims in this part of the world. Hhhmmm, wonder why?
Kinzi, I blamed both sexes.
You weren’t listening cos your feminist psycho-babble was playing like an old record. Look at your comment, you only blame males. I am saying the blame is equitable.
Metal, guy, you DO need to get married, but God help that girl! It’s not all about sex for women. It’s about security and commitment. And yes, it is a matter of very foolish choices on both sides. But don’t tell me for a minute that mother’s-in-law in this region don’t wield incredible influence over their sons to conform to what they want (for good or for evil)
Shirin, the BIG difference is that there are LAWS in the West to protect abused women and children and courts who can prosecute either parent kidnapping children. This isn’t about insulting Jordan, but exposing what needs to be changed.
Hahahaha…gosh this was a really funny post.
Am sorry, men turning into completely different people and women turning into completely different women I don’t buy. See, its all about the sex once again. Can I create a word like befuddled or bewitched?
Thanx!
It’s besexed. As in “the complete and utter failure of all senses save the sexual ones, whereby men turn into walking hardons and women are in heat”. Also known in scientific circles as “so horny your head is up your own ass”.
Man meets woman, both get besexed. They jump in the sack, roll of into the hay, and what the hey, less than a year later they are married and have a little fucker running around. So besexed can a person be that they MISS all the warning signs of what may lie around the corner.
And THERE ARE SIGNS.
Nope, no apologies. Screw it. There are thousands upon thousands of such stories out there…I know a few who have ended up in the trenches fighting for their daughters, son, pet gerbils. It is the fight of their lives.
But its all a game of consequences. Play the game right and you won’t pay for the tragic consequences. Play it while you are besexed and you get burned. And innocent children ONCE AGAIN pay for the sins of the father.
AND mother.
Now THAT is my hot button. There should be a universal law where you can ditch your parents and send them to hell if your reasons are validated. Honor they father and mother is so archaic when father and mother don’t have the humanity to honor themselves.
Besexed, begone…
No comments. I’m not really into that subgenre of fiction.
The fact that Arab men usually get the custody over their kids is a big issue, I believe. I read about a case in Jordan where the mother is fighting bitterly to regain her kids’ custody after their father died. The court ruled in favour of the uncle getting the custody because they both ( father, and uncle) converted to Islam, while the mother and kids did not. I did not follow what the subsequent rulings of the court were, any updates?
Sorry guys, this topic is my hot button. I have helped four women “escape” Jordan with their kids in the years I have lived here, the most recent was this February. The US Embassy has a special division to help citizens in such a predicament as it is such a huge problem. And it IS tarnishing Jordan’s reputation.
These women marry Jordanians in the US then move here to provide a “better” environment for their kids. Then dad/hubby becomes a completely different person, succombs to family pressure to be who he was, and all hell breaks loose. The mom character in NWMYD didn’t come close to experiencing the abuse women I know have. For every one that gets out there are dozens isolated and locked up in Amman, (yea Rivda, Wihdat too) Irbid, southern villages who will never get out because the whole family is watching. Many husbands don’t arrange to get their wives Jordanian citizenship so that even if they could get to the airport they have thousands of dinar in fines that prevent them. As the children grow the families turn them against their mothers.
It is sick, inhumane and crueler than life to watch what these women go through at the hand of someone who promised to “love” them.
