MILWAUKEE (AP) — Midwest Airlines canceled a flight ready to take off for San Francisco after a passenger found Arabic-style handwriting in the company’s in-flight magazine and alerted the crew.
The plane, carrying 118 passengers and five crew members, had already pulled away from the gate at Mitchell International Airport on Sunday evening. It returned to the gate, the passengers got off, security authorities were notified, all luggage was checked and the aircraft was inspected. Nothing was found.
The passengers were put up in nearby hotels and booked on a Monday morning flight.
The writing was in Farsi, the language used in Iran, said airline spokeswoman Carol Skornycka. She said she didn’t know exactly what the writing said but was similar to a prayer, "something of a contemplative nature."

Ok, I will make sure not to write my mom a letter while I’m on a US plane. Damn you Bin Ladin, Zarqawi and the rest of the cronies for tarnishing my mother-tongue.
whats happened to the world ,, have they lost their minds ,, i say if a true THREAT was written in english or any other language they will take it lightly ,,, thinking maybe a kid wrote it … god give them brains plz
Mariam,
Lets admit it, we brought all that on ourselves-I mean those who are in the shape of Bin Laden. Why talk about racisim and discremination ! Do you have a better example of dicremination free country in the Arab world?. I personally, had the chance to board a flight within a month after sep 11 inside the USA. By that time, after all inspections on passengers and baggage were carried out in your way to the plane, they started picking randomly passengers and carrying out more thorough inspections just prior to boarding the plane. As a middle eastern looking young man -with a moustach and a frouny face, I expected to be picked in that sample. Instead, airport authorities started picking young ladies, people with blue eyes, and blond hair for that inspection. I was stunned ! why not pick me?. I boarded airplanes several times in the US after that, never have I noticed any different treatment. I thought many times to go and ask the pilots to show me some equipment my company designs , and I am involved in that-work in Avionics-and are installed in cockpits, but then I said to myself-are you crazy !! See ! we lost confidence and think that others no longer trust us because of those bunch of murderers !!

I agree with Mariam, We are all sick of violence and terrorism. I believe what she is trying to say is that when there is a problem you don’t solve the symptoms. You need to look into the root cause of the problem. The Islamic militancy was not born out of nowhere, because some few spoiled brats were sitting at home very bored and thinking lets go kill some people for fun. There is a long history of death and rape and violence and demolition that headed the creation of these movements. Also don’t forget there were a few generations in Palestine and Lebanon and now Iraq who grew up in war and are very used to the idea of death. These all are starter kit of a terrorist. On the other hand, you are right as well it is the fault of the moderate Muslims because they don’t try to interfere or change the faulty idea of Islam promoting violence.

I think Europe is waking up to the influx of extremists seeking asylum in its territories. One example is what’s happening now in the Netherlands after the murder of the filmmaker who criticized Islam.
I think fundamentalists will no longer be able find a safe haven in Europe. Long gone the days when they were able to hide under the blanket of “tolerance” and “political correctness”.
Let me first draw Mariam’s attention to the transitional period between the “bad German” and the “bad Arab.” During that time there was always the “bad Soviet/Russian” (genereally speaking, but also Eastern German, etc.) Remember Jamed Bond? Rocky?
Without taking the blame off of monsieur UBL, I sometimes get tempted to revert to the mentality of the system we were raised in; namely the “marshal mentality” or “3aqliyyeh 3orfiyyeh”. This is modeled after modern-day Turkey where religious symbols are banned from every day life. I say, we have to start by extracting potential extremists from schools, mosques and even from the “Civil Status and Passports Department”-Yes, the one in Jabal Amman if my memory serves me right. The downside to this is (1) being described as a country with a poor record when it comes to civil rights, and (2) allowing the extremists an excuse to seek asylum in Norway, Holland or England (Abu Hamza Al Masri et al.)
Maybe I am being an extremist myself…
Mariam,
Before the rise of Islamic militancy, this kind of incident would not have happened. If we wanna play the game of the chicken and the egg, then I think that what came first was fundamentalism, which resulted in the stereotyping of a whole nation.
And I also blame the moderate voices for not harshly condemning these attacks. I find it very disturbing that mullahs and clerics rushed to issue a fatwa calling for the death of Salman Rushdie, but no one dared issue a similar thing for the likes of Bin Ladin.
It is about time that moderate voices harshly condemn these attacks done in the name of God.
I’m sick of hearing justfications for these terrorist, barbaric attacks. No matter how frustrated one is with US policy, approving of the massacre of innocent people is as bad as committing it.
Yes, I still blame Bin Ladin and all the fanatics!
That is sad, but it is very expected… I mean i would panic if I were in that flight and probably would be the first to leave. I dont know if it is entirely Bin laden and the rest of the gang’s fault, I mean 99% it is..but there has been racism agains Arabs way before this whole thing happened. Look at any movie even the stupid back to the future… the bad people are always arabs. (well before it was the germans, and when people got tired of the Germans they found new monster and that is the arabs). Natasha you can’t take the facts derived from all the events that lead to this. I mean there is a very long history that lead to having people like bin laden in the world… and whose responsible for this history, is it Bin laden? I wonder.
