Islamic reformer Wafa Sultan receiving death threats
LOS ANGELES, March 10 -- Three weeks ago, Dr. Wafa Sultan was a largely unknown Syrian-American psychiatrist living outside Los Angeles, nursing a deep anger and despair about her fellow Muslims.
Today, thanks to an unusually blunt and provocative interview on Al Jazeera television on Feb. 21, she is an international sensation, hailed as a fresh voice of reason by some, and by others as a heretic and infidel who deserves to die.
In the interview, which has been viewed on the Internet more than a million times and has reached the e-mail of hundreds of thousands around the world, Dr. Sultan bitterly criticized the Muslim clerics, holy warriors and political leaders who she believes have distorted the teachings of Muhammad and the Koran for 14 centuries. She said the world's Muslims, whom she compares unfavorably with the Jews, have descended into a vortex of self-pity and violence.
Source [New York Times]
Dr. Sultan said the world was not witnessing a clash of religions or cultures, but a battle between modernity and barbarism, a battle that the forces of violent, reactionary Islam are destined to lose. In response, clerics throughout the Muslim world have condemned her, and her telephone answering machine has filled with dark threats. But Islamic reformers have praised her for saying out loud, in Arabic and on the most widely seen television network in the Arab world, what few Muslims dare to say even in private.
"I believe our people are hostages to our own beliefs and teachings," she said in an interview this week in her home in a Los Angeles suburb. Dr. Sultan, who is 47, wears a prim sweater and skirt, with fleece-lined slippers and heavy stockings. Her eyes and hair are jet black and her modest manner belies her intense words: "Knowledge has released me from this backward thinking. Somebody has to help free the Muslim people from these wrong beliefs."
Perhaps her most provocative words on Al Jazeera were those comparing how the Jews and Muslims have reacted to adversity. Speaking of the Holocaust, she said, "The Jews have come from the tragedy and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror; with their work, not with their crying and yelling."
She went on, "We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people."
She concluded, "Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them."
Her views caught the ear of the American Jewish Congress, which has invited her to speak in May at a conference in Israel. "We have been discussing with her the importance of her message and trying to devise the right venue for her to address Jewish leaders," said Neil B. Goldstein, executive director of the organization.
She is probably more welcome in Tel Aviv than she would be in Damascus. Shortly after the broadcast, clerics in Syria denounced her as an infidel. One said she had done Islam more damage than the Danish cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad, a wire service reported.
Dr. Sultan is "working on a book that -- if it is published -- it's going to turn the Islamic world upside down ... I have reached the point that doesn't allow any U-turn. I have no choice. I am questioning every single teaching of our holy book." The working title is, The Escaped Prisoner: When God Is a Monster.
Dr. Sultan grew up in a large traditional Muslim family in Banias, Syria, a small city on the Mediterranean about a two-hour drive north of Beirut. Her father was a grain trader and a devout Muslim, and she followed the faith's strictures into adulthood.
But, she said, her life changed in 1979 when she was a medical student at the University of Aleppo, in northern Syria. At that time, the radical Muslim Brotherhood was using terrorism to try to undermine the government of President Hafez al-Assad. Gunmen of the Muslim Brotherhood burst into a classroom at the university and killed her professor as she watched, she said.
"They shot hundreds of bullets into him, shouting, 'God is great!' " she said. "At that point, I lost my trust in their god and began to question all our teachings. It was the turning point of my life, and it has led me to this present point. I had to leave. I had to look for another god."
She and her husband, who now goes by the Americanized name of David, laid plans to leave for the United States. Their visas finally came in 1989, and the Sultans and their two children (they have since had a third) settled in with friends in Cerritos, Calif., a prosperous bedroom community on the edge of Los Angeles County.
After a succession of jobs and struggles with language, Dr. Sultan has completed her American medical licensing, with the exception of a hospital residency program, which she hopes to do within a year. David operates an automotive-smog-check station. They bought a home in the Los Angeles area and put their children through local public schools. All are now American citizens.
BUT even as she settled into a comfortable middle-class American life, Dr. Sultan's anger burned within. She took to writing, first for herself, then for an Islamic reform Web site called Annaqed (The Critic), run by a Syrian expatriate in Phoenix.
An angry essay on that site by Dr. Sultan about the Muslim Brotherhood caught the attention of Al Jazeera, which invited her to debate an Algerian cleric on the air last July.
In the debate, she questioned the religious teachings that prompt young people to commit suicide in the name of God. "Why does a young Muslim man, in the prime of life, with a full life ahead, go and blow himself up?" she asked. "In our countries, religion is the sole source of education and is the only spring from which that terrorist drank until his thirst was quenched."
Her remarks set off debates around the globe and her name began appearing in Arabic newspapers and Web sites. But her fame grew exponentially when she appeared on Al Jazeera again on Feb. 21, an appearance that was translated and widely distributed by the Middle East Media Research Institute, known as Memri. Memri said the clip of her February appearance had been viewed more than a million times.
"The clash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions or a clash of civilizations," Dr. Sultan said. "It is a clash between two opposites, between two eras. It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality." She said she no longer practiced Islam. "I am a secular human being," she said.
The other guest on the program, identified as an Egyptian professor of religious studies, Dr. Ibrahim al-Khouli, asked, "Are you a heretic?" He then said there was no point in rebuking or debating her, because she had blasphemed against Islam, the Prophet Muhammad and the Koran.
Dr. Sultan said she took those words as a formal fatwa, a religious condemnation. Since then, she said, she has received numerous death threats on her answering machine and by e-mail. One message said: "Oh, you are still alive? Wait and see." She received an e-mail message the other day, in Arabic, that said, "If someone were to kill you, it would be me."
Dr. Sultan said her mother, who still lives in Syria, is afraid to contact her directly, speaking only through a sister who lives in Qatar. She said she worried more about the safety of family members here and in Syria than she did for her own.
"I have no fear," she said. "I believe in my message. It is like a million-mile journey, and I believe I have walked the first and hardest 10 miles."

what a pity.
this lady has passed judgement onto the religion based on the wrongdoings of people, and not the religion itself.

A very brave woman, braver than any suicide bomber – and her weapon is much more powerful. I wonder how many others have similar beliefs, but lacked the courage to speak.
I fear that, things being as they are, she is not long for this world.

this woman is brave and in some ways speaks truths that should be aired, but it doesn't mean she is right in everything.
while the cultures of some Muslim extremists is wrong, it is an arrogance to say that the 21st century west is perfect. we hear about bad things in the Muslim world, but also bad things in 'civilized' world. the western world supports all kinds of uncivilized behaviour: prostitues, drugs, drunkeness, abortion, death penalty of innocent people, bombing innocent people, torturing innocent people and the west is full of murderers and rapists and abusers and violence. this is not to say Muslim countries don't have these problems too - but what is right and wrong should not be determined by nationality or religion or race.
Posted by: nazanin | Mar 19, 2006 5:28:32 PM
Nobody's perfect and all religions and nationalities have their shortcomings, although we usually don't see them as clearly in our own. That is why no society should force their world-view on others. We certainly shouldn't kill others just because they don't share our beliefs. Live and let live.
As Dr. Sultan says, if you like "you can believe in stones, just as long as you don't throw them at me."
It's true that the West could probably learn something from the (Middle) East in certain areas such as reigning in dangerous and degrading sexual activity and the importance of the family unit.
(But I'm doubtful we would learn much good from their greater recent experience in torturing or bombing innocent people.)
Perhaps, perhaps, the Middle East will learn about the virtues of democracy, the rule of law, the right of dissent and free markets from the West. We are seeing these concepts given a chance to succeed in Iraq. Perhaps a modern, peaceful and prosperous Islamic country will eventually result and lead the way toward a better future for others. Perhaps not. This is really a test of the Muslim world more than that of the West.
Ironically, a society that could blend the virtues of Islam with those of the West might well someday represent the greatest economic power in the world. And even if not, free and peaceful economic competition tends to make more winners than losers. Religious wars create many more losers nowadays.

After watching the video, I can only see this woman as an agent provocateur. She adds nothing to the dialogue except more bomb-throwing of a verbal sort. What a shame that some people perceive this as courage.

Rod Amis, it's courageous on the basis that this woman has spoken out and now her life is endangered. whether you agree with her or not, it's courageous.

the biggest threat from Muslim terrrorists would be if they joined the British and American armed forces and used the weapons against us. look at the damage they did with passenger planes, imagine what they could do with fighter planes? Muslims should not be allowed in our armies. anyone remember the Muslim American soldier who killed some of his colleagues by throwing a grenade into their camp? that's just a warning of worse things that could happen. I'm not anti-Muslim nor do i have anything against normal Muslims, but we've got to be vigilant and not politically correct.

I'm not a fan of Islam and I find the Islamification of Britain alarming. but also I find the liberal society we have equally alarming. both in their ways are backward and uncivilised. I'm a young white English woman and find myself quite repulsed by some of the behaviour of my contemparies. extreme decadence leads of extreme reactions (in this case from Muslims.) we need to find a middle ground and bring back respect.

FEMINISM = ZIONISM = COMMUNISM = SATANISM .
memri is run by israel's unfamous mossad
MEMRI is the abbreviation for Middle East Media Research Institute, a pro-Israel organization with headquarters in Washington DC and its Media Centre in Israel - "...
a non-profit in Washington DC that specializes in translating and circulating mainly Arab-language materials, selected to display the Arab world in a poor light, to the advantage of Israel."
FULL ENGLISH TRANSCRIPT TRANSLATION AL- JAZEERA here : Ehttp://aqoul.com/images/wafa_sultan.pdf
The MEMRI debate was very much truncated, and the full debate had the scholar for the most part patronizing her, and not taking her seriously.
Her arguments were just too childesh to take seriously, and the audiacity of her facile questioning for the most part seemed like trolling rather than engaging in debate.
The showing for the scholar was hardly as bad as MEMRI makes it look...
This may enlighten you about their organisation .......
Fake Saddam Interview Put Out By MEMRI : SF Bay Area Indymedia
"A knowledgeable US government official has informed "Iraq News" that the 'remarkable' interview with Saddam Hussein, published by MEMRI TV, is almost certainly a hoax." Read More:
Did you not wonder if it was a debate, why was Wafa Sultan doing all the gibber-gabbering? Where are the responses from the two (2) Muslim
participants in the debate? Why were they not given the opportunity to have the same air-time to respond to this woman? The way the video clip
was going on-and-off so many times, isn't it obvious to you that the debate was one-sided and had been edited! Some debate!!!
Wafa's statements are a flagrant distortion of the truth. When it comes to terrorism Wafa is totally wrong in sugarcoating Jewish history. She
fudges her claims here because Israeli authors Avi Shlaim, Tom Segev, Ilan Pappé and Benny Morris have written comprehensive and
well-researched books about Israel's history and the major role terrorism had in it
MEMRI has published translated and heavily edited portions of the exchange. Since the full translation was made in an attempt to reduce any misinformation or ignorant postulation, and hope that the full transcript speaks accurately for itself
MISLEADING M.E.M.R.I. : obviously, we don't know why the people @ m.e.m.r.i. chose to translate the term mulhidah (the term ibrahim al-khouly used to ask wafa sultan if she is one) as "heretic" and not "atheist".
the term for "apostate" (the punishment for which could be death) is murtadd/murtaddah. and it is highly unlikely that ibrahim al-khouly, being a professor @ al-azhar, mistakenly used the word mulhidah when ACTUALLY he wanted to say murtaddah.
as for al-khouly's answer - the m.e.m.r.i translation was almost right with the phrase "there is no point in rebuking you", but the term 'atb means "rebuke" in the sense of "censure, blame, reproof, reprimand" and here it is clear that his argument is: if you're an atheist, then i cannot say anything if you curse islam, the prophet, the qur'an. he implies that atheists are outside islam and islam has no say over them. it'd be different if wafa sultan had self-identified as a believing muslim - in that case, insulting the religion, the prophet, the qur'an would be a different matter and he (ibrahim al-khouly) would have the right to censure/reprimand/rebuke her.
in short, his answer is almost the EXACT OPPOSITE of a "death fatwa".
1. Two questions: Is it fair for MEMRI to disseminate such a biased perspective? And will all the websites i saw propagating the false-death-fatwa meme publish retractions? Or is it just ok for that false meme to pass into urban myth.
2. The most interesting thing i read that Al-Khouly said was, "so, in order to become a progressive like you, muslims must become secular, must renounce our faith..." How many Christians and Jews here are prepared to renounce their faith to become progressives? That is not a rhetorical question. Transhumanism is soon going to force exactly that kind of choice for western religionists.
Anyone with a 3rd grade history lesson would have told you she was completely wrong. Proto-Zionist’s in Palestine and Europe have blown up anyone or anything that challenged the establishment of a Zionist safe haven. The Bask have had a long war with Spain (which is still alive and well), the Tamil tigers have had more suicide bombings than all other nations combined including the ones in occupied Palestine. The illegal occupation of Iraq and Vietnam by the United Hates of America are nothing compared to the massacres of Pawnee, Lakota, and 300 other Native American nations and cultures over a time span of 400 years. Oh and by the way I’ll stay away from the enslavement, rape, and killing of over one hundred million Africans just so you don’t say I am playing the race card. And let us not forget the most recent tragedy of all the war casualties of WWI and WWII. You racist ethnocentric xenophobes make me sick. Anyone who wants to preserve their way of life or practice their beliefs or culture is not a threat to you it is you who are a threat to them. The Anglo-Yiddish a.k.a. Ashkenazi and Anglo-Saxon war machines are well know for their long running campaigns and treaty breakings.

it was much better when European women were ruled by their men. wouldn't it be nice if this whole islamification thing happened to us soon? hey, they'd even stop bombing us. where's the catch guys? as many wives as you want! women doing what you want! and the end to terrorism! let's embrace this Islam.
Posted by: ANDY | May 1, 2006 12:14:44 PM
This lady is speaking the truth!! Those that disagree with her just cannot handle the truth!! Innocent people and children are dying just because Muslims do not agree with other peoples religion. These extremists have taken things to far and they say it is in the name of Allah. Well unless thier Allah condones the killing of innocent people just because they choose a different religion I do not see how that is so. They have terrorized this country and many others with their death threats!! The Osama Bin Ladens of this world and all those that stand by them need to all be put in one place and let them bomb each other until they are all gone. Then we can get back to living in some peace where everyone can be free to believe what they want. There are many good Muslims in this world and unfortunately these radicals are making ALL middle easterns look bad. Thank you Wafa, we need more courageous people like you in this world.

I would love to send a note of support to this intelligent, courageous woman, but of course I'm sure for security reasons that is improbable at best. So, this will have to do. She has cut right to the bone of an issue that few have been brave enough to touch upon. Neither side is completely free from blame, but it is difficult to demonstrate a similar violent intolerance in the west. Probably the best solution in the end would be for all non-Muslims to move out of Muslim theocracies and let them all wither on the vine. But for geopolitical and economic reasons that is almost certainly an untenable position.
Posted by: Chandler McGrew | Aug 1, 2006 11:46:39 AM
I can not agree more with Mr. McGrew. Although,it saddens and worries me how long the world will have to suffer due to these muslim extremist. Hopefully more muslims will come to their senses about how to truly honor god.

I come from a military background, father-air force major,mother-a.f-1st lt.-nurse, 2 brothers-a.f-colonel ret., and a.f.- major ret., and as a youth spent a major portion living all over our globe. Many of my friends i met during these frequent ,and wonderful stops in many different countries. Basic to meeting new People in their country was this: being respectful to each person, their cultures and language as well, and being genuinely interested in the people and what motivates their lives. Their are bad people wherever you go,it's the good ones that you remember and keep in your heart. I did not pursue a military career after college, I travelled the U.S.A. for 15 years ,playing guitar in a band entertaining folks both rich and not so well off. The one thing that seemed wrong to me as I toured the country and abroad is that religion has a way of forming and controlling peoples views in daily life that can take over a region of the country , with smaller ,often fanatical members running local groups ,communities that create the violence, chaos, and narrow minded beliefs that can sometimes be trouble to others not of "the faith". This woman,Dr. Sultan, has my respect and hope that her path in life is a long road filled with good memories of life here in her adopted U.S.A.

When fundamentalists become leaders, justice is lost
When women become possessions, freedom is lost
When terrorists become heroes, peace is lost
Wafa, you go girl!!! The muslim world will begin to be a better place when muslim women say to their men: "I not your possession I am your partner. I choose how I will live, what I will wear, what I will do, and where I will go". One day this will spread like a fire and on that day the muslim world will be reborn.

Bravo, mrs. Sultan.
You are one of the few real exponents in this world of the freedom of speech. What you did was very brave. I hope that this is an eye-opener for the (muslim) community!
Even after the murder of Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn, and write / filmdirector Theo van Gogh,
people think that this is not enough evidence that we deal with back-stabbing idiots and stone-age ideas !!!
