Iran becomes new focus of Prophet cartoon protests
TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran cut off trade ties with Denmark and Iranians pelted the Austrian Embassy with Molotov cocktails and stones on Monday in the latest protest over the publication of satirical cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in European newspapers. The 200 protesters, chanting "God is greatest" and "Europe, Europe, shame on you!" smashed the embassy's windows with stones and then tried to hurl Molotov cocktails inside.
They exploded in flames against metal grills guarding the windows, but the fires were quickly put out by police with fire extinguishers. Austria currently holds the presidency of the European Union. Protesters also waved placards and shouted slogans against the EU's stance on Iran's nuclear program.
Anger has spread across the Muslim world over 12 caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that were first published in Denmark's Jyllands-Posten in September and recently reprinted in European media and elsewhere in what the newspapers say is a statement of free speech. Islam prohibits any depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

U.S. State Department reaction
The United States condemned the protests Monday, as administration officials continued to walk a fine line between supporting free speech and calling the cartoons offensive. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said, "What we can do is to speak out very clearly in support of freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and urge understanding and tolerance -- not violence."
"We certainly at this time urge governments to take any steps that they might to lower tensions concerning this issue," McCormack said. He specifically said Saudi Arabia might be one of those countries that could help.
Iran has withdrawn its ambassador to Denmark and Iranian Commerce Minister Massoud Mirkazemi said on Monday that all trade with Denmark had been severed because of the cartoons, first published in September in a Danish newspaper.
"All trade ties with Denmark were cut," he was quoted by the Iranian student news agency ISNA as telling a news conference. Mirkazemi said from Tuesday Iran would stop any Danish goods from entering its customs' areas. Iran imports some $280 million worth of goods a year from Denmark.
Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said he disapproves of the caricatures, but insisted he cannot apologize on behalf of his country's independent press. Trade ties were under review with all countries where the cartoons were published, Mirkazemi said.

Comments
I've been looking at this image for a few moments now and I have to say I just don't get it. What on earth could have that guy in the middle there so enraged. This information has been out there since September and the story "broke" so to speak a week plus ago. Did he just get the news? Is someone stepping on his toe? There is just absolutely no rational way to explain that kind of rage. It has nothing to do with reality. Nothing. People that respond in this way are chanelling something else far darker into this controvery. It's understood that these actions were despicable and the newspaper has apologized. Reaction like this are simply beyond the pale. The world has finally broken off its axis. Hang on.

"Iran becomes new focus of Prophet cartoon protests"
Hardly. In a city of 10 mil 200 people show up for a demonstration that was previously arranged by the Basij and advertised in almost every state owned news agency. Later on 400 people showed up in front of the Danish embassy. Now compare that with what's going on in Arab countries and even Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
And Dane, that guy's just a cheer leader. There are a few of them, male and female, for these occasions.

I just wanna say that if you pay attention to the remarks and comments you cannot find any Iranian , all of them are arabs.

Denmark has no right to criticise or satirise other people's beliefs. Being muslims WE respect all the religions because ALLAH and our PROPHET ordered us to be like that. Try to respect us and remember that the Muslims are not less but we are great number and we also are part of the world. Islam bans any depiction of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) or Allah (SWT).
SHAME ON YOU "Jyllands-Posten" by publishing cartoons disrespectful to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

I'm definitely whipping a dead horse here, but want to put this out anyway.... Muslims, you claim you respect other religions... if you do... realize, other religions are bound by their own belief systems, not the laws of Islam... The image of Mohammed is forbidden only to Muslims, not other religions and non-religious persons.... It is obvious to the world, Islam is not respectful of other religions, we see incidents of disrespect every day....What I find most interesting, is time and time again we have, Muslims state, we respect other religions, Islam is peaceful... I want to say to you, if you make statements like that,. in light of everything occurring in the world, incidents of disrespect so open and filling the news everyday... you are saying that Islam is not only everything you are denying but Islam is a religion filled with liars.
